For centuries, women in Afghanistan have been victims of cruel treatment at the hands of fundamentalist and patriarchal government. Arguably, the worst abuses ___1___ after the Taliban came to power in 1996, whereupon one of the most restrictive system of laws in the country’s history was ___2___.

Women were forbidden to work and could not leave home ___3___ a burqa and being accompanied by a male relative. They could not visit male doctors, nor female ones, either, for women were forbidden to practice ___4___. Schooling, too, was banned to women, and institutions that didn’t respect this edict were burned ___5___the ground. Women had so few rights that young girls could even be sold as wives or prostitutes.

Women (and men) who defied the regime were ___6___ punished. Public lashings, dismemberment, and death by drowning are but a few ___7___ of what was in store for offenders.

Then, in November 2001, the Taliban were overthrown by a United State-led coalition. This opened the door for humanitarian organizations like CARE and RAWA to restart basic ___8___, including education, medical care, counseling, and financial support to families and orphans. In the new Afghanistan, women are regaining their ___9___ and are even starting to fill government positions. Much, much more work remains to be done, but after so many years of despair, there is ___10__ some hope.

(Cooperate for Assistance and Relief Everywhere)或阿富汗妇女革命协会
