Greenland Heads To The Polls
What's up sunshine I'm Coy Wire this is CNN 10
it is Tuesday March 11th
thank you for spending part of your day with us right here on CNN 10
where we're going to get 10 minutes of news from around the world fueling our minds and we'll have a little bit of fun too
all right we start today in China where the week-long national people's Congress meeting comes to an end
this is China's largest political meeting of the Year where political leaders and delegates of the nation's legislature from across the country meet in Beijing
China is a socialist state with a unified system of governance where one party the Chinese Communist Party leads the nation's one branch of government the National People's Congress
in this week-long convening of China's rubber stamp legislature the Chinese government reveals the Communist party's plan setting the tone for the year ahead
convene [kənˋvin] v. 集会;聚集
this means there is no debate there are no changes to the agenda and delegates are expected to implement the policies adopted by the CCP
the economy was at the top of this meeting's priorities for 2025
China's vast economy has been slowing in recent years so the Chinese government unveiled its plans to address economic growth and pledging to boost consumer spending at home
the meeting also addressed how Beijing plans to continue its transformation into a technological Powerhouse by ramping up investment and private sector support for technological innovations
all of this comes as Beijing prepares for a potential drawn out economic showdown with the United States over tariffs
showdown [ˋʃo͵daʊn] n. 摊牌;最后的一决雌雄
US president Donald Trump recently doubled tariffs on all Chinese Imports to 20%
Beijing responded by imposing retaliatory tariffs escalating a trade war of sorts
our mark Stewart and Simone McCarthy were at the National People's Congress meeting and they are going to give us a glimpse of some of what goes on behind the scenes check it out
from our spot here you can see delegates from all over China arriving at the Great Hall of the People
this is the annual meeting of the National People's Congress
I'm on Tianan Square normally it is off limits to interational press but this is an exception as this is China's largest political meeting of the Year
there are lots of police officers here security is very tight
this whole series of events is very controlled and this is just what we're seeing from the outside
all those delegates you saw some 3,000 in total this is where they'll spend the week
you'll often see scenes like this because it's one of the rare opportunities for local media to actually talk with officials and tea service is a staple before the main events with which are happening here the great Auditorium
auditorium [͵ɔdəˋtorɪəm] n. 会堂,礼堂
we're standing on the balcony but we're at least a football field away from the stage which is the closest most media will get to China's Elite leadership.
throughout the week delegates will discuss China's plans for the year ahead and next week they'll vote usually always almost unanimously to approve the plan
unanimously [jʊˋnænəməslɪ] adv. 无异议地;全体一致地
this is all happening as China faces economic problems at home as well as pressure from the United States
this is all about showing stability and confidence everything here is highly choreographed a way for China to highlight its system as orderly and as unified in contrast to what it sees as the chaos in some Western democracies
choreograph [ˋkɔrɪə͵græf] v. 精心设计(活动等)
but in the end the real power lies with leader xiin ping and his grip on China's Communist Party.
10 second trivia
which of the following is the northernmost capital city in the world
Reykjavík, Iceland
Oslo Norway or
Ottawa Canada
answer is Nuuk, Greenland the capital city of the Danish territory sits only a few kilometers north of its neighbor Iceland's Capital Reykjavík to make it the northernmost capital city in the world
now to news regarding the Danish territory Greenland where greenlanders are heading to the polls in a general election one week after president Donald Trump reiterated his call for the US to acquire the island the ongoing International Spotlight on the self-governing territory has already played a major role in the lead-up to the election
lead-up [ˋlid͵ʌp] n.(导致另一事物之)预备阶段
our Fred Pleitgen shows us how the Island's future relationship with Denmark and the US potentially hang in the balance as voters head to the polls
it's an unlikely place for a geopolitical tug of war. Greenland with a population of about 57,000 known for its fishing natural resources and glaciers goes to the polls on Tuesday
something that in the past probably wouldn't have attracted a lot of global attention but that was before Greenland caught the eye of US president Donald Trump
we will keep you safe we will make you rich and together we will take Greenland to Heights like you have never thought possible before
it's a bold offer especially since Greenland is a territory of Denmark though it's semi-autonomous with its own Parliament but it does rely on Denmark for about half its annual budget
the US already has a military base in Greenland which plays a key role in missile defense and satellite communication and Greenland is also the gateway to the Arctic lying on the shortest route from North America to Europe so its location is strategic
but if forced to choose between the US and Denmark many greenlanders say they prefer another option
we don't want to be Danes we don't want to be Americans we want to be greenlandic
it's a question of identity that many greenlanders feel is at the heart of the election
we need to be independent we need that identity for our people in Actic
I hope Greenland to uh get more out of in the world picture right now it's just uh dependent on Denmark and the money we're getting from there
most of Greenland's main political parties support Independence for Greenland which can be declared if a referendum passes and the Danish Parliament approves but they differ on how soon that should happen with one party saying Greenland should cut ties immediately
let's hope for a quick process but as soon as we start that process we have several other things that will start one of them will be defense negotiations with the United States about the defense of Greenland when we are independent
Trump's comments are also reverberating in Denmark itself which recently said it will spend more than $2 billion to boost Arctic security and admitted it had neglected Greenland's defense for years
reverberate [rɪˋvɝbə͵ret] v. 震撼;产生广泛影响
it's a relationship that could soon change if Greenland steps up its pursuit of Independence or uses its leverage to negotiate a better deal with Denmark
there will be a new government and it will put a tremendous pressure on the Danish government to have a position a real position in terms of if Greenland wants Independence what will the cost be
Independence isn't on Tuesday's ballot but the results could reconfigure Greenland's Future something the US and many others will be closely watching.
