Maker hope new ‘ultrathin’ notebooks fill a niche  「

Those in the market for a laptop will find a batch of new, mid-priced models that promise less weight and longer battery life than traditional notebook computers, but more performance – and a bigger screen and keyboard – than they’d get with a netbook.

A few models were introduced earlier this year, including Hewlett-Packard’s Pavilion dv2 and Acer’s Timeline series. Their sleek frames are intended to be reminiscent of premium laptops from Apple and other markers, although they may not offer all the features or souped-up performance.

The new laptops will cost several hundred dollars less than those premium models. And they will do more than netbooks, which often sell for under $500 but have low processing speeds that are primarily suited for checking e-mail and surfing the web.

The low-voltage design doesn’t require a big cooling system, which allows for a thinner frame while extending battery life to seven hours or more. Manufacturers say the ultrathins have enough memory and speed for “casual” game-playing, multi-tasking, editing photos or uploading video. The thin frame means some models don’t have room for a built-in optical drive, however, so you may need an exterior drive for watching DVDs.

But analysts also warn that the proliferation of new models could lead to some confusion for consumers.

“You could have a situation where you have three notebooks on the same store shelf” – a netbook, an ultrathin and a traditional laptop – “with the same screen sizes but widely different prices,” analysts Richard Shim warned.

With so many choices available, some analysts say it’s unclear whether the ultrathins will have lasting appeal. “You may not get all the performance of a traditional notebook and you don’t get all the portability of a mini-notebook,” said Shim, using an alternative term for netnook. “But you’re not paying the higher price of a traditional notebook and you’re getting more performance than a mini.”

Company turns water into effective, chemical-free cleaning product

For Tennant Co., tap water may become gold. The 139-year-old Minnesota company, known for selling floor-cleaning machines, is using a new technology that electricity converts water into a super-cleanser.

Some long-standing industrial customers are already using the groundbreaking technology. And in the current environmentally conscious era, Tennant is hoping the chemical-free cleaning will generate hundreds of millions in new sales as it expands its customer base and converts businesses to the new technology.

“What we have discovered is a way to electrically convert plain tap water to perform like a powerful detergent,” said Chris Killingstad, Tennant’s chief executive. “You can imagine when we went out there with this people looked at it and said, ‘It can’t be true.’” But Tennant introduced the new cleaning technology in commercial scrubber machines in May 2008 and gave some of its major customers machines to test the process, “Seeing is believing,” Killingstad said.

Akshay Rao, a marketing professor at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of management, said that Tennant’s timing is good.

Companies are being asked by their consumers and suppliers “what they are doing on the topic of sustainability and green issues and conservation,” Rao said. If they use the Tennant chemical-free process, it’s tangible evidence that they are doing something to protect the environment.

Killingstad said Tennant created an advanced products development group a few years ago, and it is charged with seeing “if we could come up with a new set of solutions beyond just floor cleaning.”

Killibgstad is focusing his attention on product innovation. He’s searching for other products that will reduce waste as well as the use of chemicals, water and energy. He said, “We’ve got to figure out ways to clean more of our customers’ environments than just their floors and do it in a more environmentally responsible way.”

Through genomic science, new research advances understanding of viruses

Genomic science, considered by many to be the future of medicine for its ability to identify the unique nature of organisms, took significant steps forward through the work of two separate research teams at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Duke University.

The researchers, working on unrelated projects, used the molecular science to advance the understanding of viruses.

At UNC-CH, scientists focused on HIV, for the first time mapping the distinct structures of the complex pathogen that causes AIDS. The full blueprint will provide drug developers a clearer picture of where to target potential therapies.

Duke researchers discovered that human immune cells display different molecular signatures when they mount attacks against cold and flu viruses, as well as bacteria. The insight paves the way for a blood test that could quickly tell doctors if patients need an antibiotic or an antiviral drug.

In a different arena of genome science, Duke scientists zoomed in on the molecular information of immune-fighting white blood cells, identifying unique patterns that signal whether a virus or a bacteria has invaded.

The researchers, led by Dr. Geoffrey Ginsburg of Duke University, found that the immune cells respond differently to the different bugs – with distinct gene patterns for flu viruses, cold viruses, bacteria and other pathogens.

“We have come up with a robust signature or pattern of molecules in the blood that ….. differentiate viral from bacterial infections with a great degree of accuracy,” Ginsburg said.

He said the information will enable scientists to create a simple blood test that could reveal whether a patient has been infected, and by what organism. That will help doctors know what drugs to prescribe, and cut down on the unnecessary use of antibiotics.

Ultimately, Ginsburg said, the goal would be to detect infections before symptoms arise – and that appears to be possible.
