Go home for the Lunar New Year holidays, or go abroad for a different kind of holiday
Getting home for the holidays
Picture a crowd spilling out into the road, a vast sea of faces jammed together and blanketing a four-lane boulevard for a quarter of a mile. It’s like the start of a marathon – with luggage.
This is holiday travel in China, as trains crisscross the countryside. In the southern boomtown of Guangzhou, hundreds of thousands of workers scramble to get aboard before the Lunar New Year, for many of them their only trip home of the year.
“I have no idea if I’ll get there,” said 26-year-old glass-factory worker Sun Zhiyu, her bags piled in a mini-mountain around her.
Worth the wait
In Guangzhou, the overflowing crowds at the train station reflect the city’s pivotal role as a magnet for workers from across the country.
Imagine if all the workers in Washington (D.C.) tried to get across the country, all at once …. Wouldn’t you have problems, too? Said retiree Liu Hanwen, 56, watching the crowd from an overpass above. “And China has a lot more people.”
But for people in China’s hard-working factory class, the prospect of losing the only vacation of the year is too good to give up lightly. Many set out with the stoicism that the Chinese call “eating bitterness.”
The last leg of a journey
Twenty-two-year-old Li Mingli, a manager in a refrigerator plant, had been awake, by his count, for 36 hours. His odyssey included a canceled flight from the city of Hangzhou, various bus trips and waiting in the line [six hours] to get a flight to Guangzhou, where he hoped to board a last leg by train to his hometown.
His hair mussed, his glasses slumped at the end of this nose, he pulled a luggage cart along the asphalt and looked for a shortcut that didn’t exist.
“I haven’t been home in a year,” Li said. “I have no choice. I have to get there.”

Holidays in other places
Although yesterday marked the beginning of the Lunar New Year holiday, other groups around the world had different kinds of holidays. For example, the Indians observe their Republic Day on January 26 each year with spectacular parades featuring elephants, camels, ethic dancers and soldiers marching in a brilliant display of color.
Australia
In 1833, Australians began observing Australia Day on January 26 as a tribute to the first Englishmen to foot on the continent. The holiday is treated differently in different parts of the nation. Some places hold fairs featuring songs, dance and barbecues. Others treat Australia Day as a time to reflect on what Australians have achieved and where they want to go as a nation.
New Zealand
Auckland, New Zealand, has its Anniversary Day each year on January 29. This year the Kiwis hosted one of the world’s largest one-day regattas, the America’s Cup. Nearly 1,000 sailors raced yachts in 35 events in Waitemata and Manukau harbors. Spectators onshore enjoyed picnicking, outdoor concerts, an arts-and-crafts market, airplane demonstrations and exhibits. Let’s read one reporter’s account of the race.

Sails finally unfurl, and the chase is on
A pennant is raised, a gun sounds, the wind rises on cue, and synchronized chaos breaks out aboard the most expensive racing yachts ever built. Just like that, the America’s Cup chase is on, and you recall what all the fuss is about. It’s about the most talented sailors in the world – all gathered on two short stretches of water on Hauraki Gulf.
Auckland [has] a rare combination of the best talent, equipment – and an ever-changing venue with a nasty streak. Rest assured: [the challengers] will accumulate some battle scars along the way. The America’s Cup is all about excellent, overcoming problems and steering smartest through a stiff wind.
