Want to throw a party that will be talked about for decades? Just follow the age-old recipe New Orleans has created for its spectacular carnival.
The New Orleans recipe starts off with a large city full of quaint neighborhoods and rich in French culture: the latter is an essential ingredient as French culture has the architecture, history, and culinary traditions second to none. Next, a liberal amount of great music is stirred in, such as rock, blues, country, and, for a swinging good time, jazz. Then, a traditional festival called Mardi Gras is added. This festival includes street processions, masked balls, huge parades, and other lavish events. It is certainly one of the most important ingredients in the New Orleans party recipe.
But no recipe for a great party would be complete without a secret ingredient. New Orleans, no surprise here, has one of the best: secret societies hold daily street pageants and extravagant parades which really spice things up. Lastly, the recipe calls for a king to preside over the celebration. New Orleans has Rex, the King of Mardi Gras, and it would be hard to find a nobler individual anywhere.
We realize this is quite a recipe to follow. Fortunately, if you want to have a great party, just go to New Orleans yourself in February. All the ingredients are there already.

Carnival in New Orleans consistently serves up one of the world’s best parties. It’s a multi-week festival and ends with Mardi Gras, the famous street celebration which literally ___1___ “Fat Tuesday.”
If Mardi Gras is the main event at Carnival, ___2___ the daily parades and floats must be the warm-ups. These warm-ups are put together by the secret societies – or “Krewes” – of New Orleans and get the party atmosphere really ___3___ several weeks before Mardi Gras. When the floats go down the streets, Krewe members stand on the floats and toss “throws” ___4___ the crowd. Locals and tourists alike vie to catch these items, which may be strings of beads, coins, or, most prized of all, hand-painted coconuts from the Zulu Krewe.
During the morning hours of Fat Tuesday, Rex leads the largest parade of the whole Carnival. Krewes and revelers wear masks and costumes and everyone ___5___ wild with celebration. Finally, at midnight, it is all over. It’s now Ash Wednesday, or Trash Wednesday as some call it in reference to all the garbage ___6___ on the street.
This year’s Mardi Gras promise to be truly special, as New Orleans vows to celebrate ___7___ the devastation caused by hurricane Katrina. It just goes to show that the best party town in the world will let nothing stand in the way of a good time.
