On March 3, 2005, pilot Steve Fossett set the world’s last great flying record when he flew the airplane GlobalFlyer around the world solo, without ever stopping or refueling. This historic event wouldn’t have been possible if not for the daring of the pilot. However, credit also has to go to the awesomely creative genius of aviation engineer Burt Rutan, the designer of GlobalFlyer.
Helping to set records is all in a day’s work for Burt. From his company’s desert workshop in Mojave, California, Burt and his team have been patiently designing and building revolutionary airplanes for years. What’s most impressive is how endlessly fertile Burt’s creativity seems to be. “An engineer in a normal [aviation] company gets to work on two or three airplanes in his whole career,” says Rutan, “We have developed over forty new types since 1972.” To work for Burt, engineers must design and build planes. This is surprisingly only if one knows that due to union laws, this is not only impossible at mainstream aviation companies like Boeing and Lockheed-Martin, but even illegal.
All Burt’s planes are made of cutting-edge materials called composites, which are stronger and lighter than naturally-occurring materials. With composites, Burt has built record-setting aircraft like GlobalFlyer as well as bizarre-looking ones, like the Boomerang plane. This lopsided plane looks like it should spin and crash, but it actually flies true because of its unusually shape.
Now, as if conquering the skies wasn’t enough, Burt Rutan – with a little help from his friends, has set his sights beyond the skies and into space.

Aviation genius Burt Rutan has changed an airport into a spaceport. On June 21, 2004, Burt and his cutting-edge aviation company launched SpaceShipOne, making Mojave Airport also Mojave Spaceport. The plane became the first privately-funded, privately-built spacecraft to reach the edge of space (100 kilometers above Earth). What’s more, Burt and his company repeated the feat again in less than two weeks, winning Burt the ten-million-US dollar Ansari X Prize.
Adventurer and billionaire Richard Branson was so impressed with Burt’s astonishing feat that he decided to open the first space tourism company. Together, the two launched Virgin Galactic in September, 2004. By 2007, Virgin Galactic’s first spacecraft, VSS Enterprise a newer model of SpaceShipOne, is slated to take nine passengers to the edge of space. For US$200,000, space tourists will experience the ride of their lives in the weightlessness of space. By the way, William Shatner, who played Captain Kirt in Star Trek, and actress Sigourney Weaver, heroine of the Alien movies, are already on the waiting list.
Hard work, openness to ideas, and a visionary approach have been at the core of Burt’s success in his endeavors. Burt focuses on rewarding improvement rather than searching for problems. In his own words, “…. Instead of firing somebody who designed something unsafe, you reward whoever found a better way… “. And safety is priority one for Burt. No pilot has ever been injured in a test flight of any of Burt’s airplanes. With a safety record and business perspective like that, Burt Rutan and his incredible flying machines may take all of us to the stars someday.
