Few men have played a more important role in modern science than Galileo Galilei. Born in Pisa, Italy in 1564, Galileo studied medicine, but switched to mathematics and natural philosophy. During his lifetime he invented or improved a number of scientific devices, including the telescope.

Galileo used the telescope to make many ground-breaking discoveries. For one thing, he was able to prove that the Milky Way is made up of many stars. For another, he was the first European to observe sunspots, and explain exactly what they are. However, it was his views on the Earth and the sun that got him into hot water.

Based on the data of observations, Galileo supported the theory that the Earth revolves around the sun. Nevertheless, the Christian Church at the time believed that the Earth was the center of the universe. Galileo was put on trial and forced to retract his theory in 1634. He was placed under house arrest for the remainder of his life, though he continued to write and study.

Galileo’s work has influenced many other scientists, including Newton, Einstein, and Stephen Hawking. Thanks to his observations, we all recognize that the Earth moves around the sun. He also made immense contributions to physics, and was one of the first to utilize mathematics to understand how the universe works.

Equally important was his use of a proper scientific method. Galileo’s father was a talented musician, and taught him to experiment with things in order to understand them. Galileo always carried out experiments, and supported his theories with proof. In one, he was said to have dropped two balls of different weights from Pisa’s renowned Leaning Tower to prove that they would fall at the same speed.

Galileo also believed in the importance of questioning established beliefs. He said, “In the question of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.” For any young scientist, there can be few better role models.
