Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is one of only six women to win a Career Grand Slam in the Open Era. She burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old, winning her first Major at Wimbledonin 2004. She added the US Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008 to her resume. Finally she completed the set of all four tennis Majors by winning the French Open in 2012.
It wasn’t easy for Sharapova to win the French Open, because the game is played on a clay court, the surface Sharapova finds the most difficult. Her powerful serve and strong baseline play are better suited to the grass and hard courts used in the other tournaments. However, she kept improving her skills and overcame her weakness. Eventually, she joined the elite club of Grand Slam winners.
Because of her great determination, Sharapova has been called “one of the best competitors in the history of the sport.” She once told Vogue writer Dodie Kazanjian, “All I know is, I’m starving to be the best.”

Maria Sharapova has been playing tennis since she was very young. When she was six, tennis legend Martina Navratilova recognized her talent. She suggested to Sharapova’s parents that they emigrate from Russia to the US so Sharapova could attend a famous tennis academy there, and they did so.
Success was not long in coming. Sharapova was the youngest girl ever to reach the finals of the Australian Open junior championships in 2002. By 2005, she was the world’s No. 1 tennis player. However, there have been difficulties along the way. A shoulder injury in 2008 affected her form and forced her to sit out for almost a year as she recovered from surgery. Sharapova’s return to her winning ways in 2011 is another example of her drive to succeed.
Away from the court, Sharapova has made her mark as well. She’s the spokesperson for several companies, and owns the candy brand Sugerpova. She also designs shoes and handbags, and became a UN Goodwill Ambassador in 2007. At the age of 26, Sharapova has plenty of time to add to her trophy collection.
