“Sherlock Holmes studied the corpse that lay in the center of the room. His keen eyes took in every detail. It seemed that nothing in the world existed for him but that piece of ground. Finally, he sniffed the corpse’s lips. ‘Poison,’ he said, with the absolute certainty that I had come to know so well.”
This is a typical scene from a Sherlock Holmes story, which, like most of his adventures, is narrated by Dr. Watson. When it comes to detectives, none is better known than Sherlock Holmes. The bright detective could solve any mystery with his incredible powers of observation and logical reasoning. By noticing small details, Holmes could learn about a person’s life, such as their background and occupation in seconds.
Originally appearing in four novels and 56 short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes has also appeared in many films and plays. Along with his close friend and companion, Dr. Watson, Conan Doyle’s creation has become one of the most popular characters in literature.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Scotland in 1859. Although he is best known as an author, Conan Doyle graduated from university with a medical degree. He wrote the first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, when he was 27. The novel was a huge success, and made Conan Doyle a household name, convincing him that he could make a better living out of writing.
However, the fame of Sherlock Holmes also presented a problem. Conan Doyle wanted to write other kinds of novels, but his audience wanted to read about Holmes. To solve the problem, he killed Holmes in the story The Final Problem. Yet, he brought the detective back eight years later when he had a great new idea for a Holmes story.
Conan Doyle’s Holmes stories have had an immense influence on detective fiction and inspired many authors, such as British crime writer Agatha Christie. For fans of the genre, the greatest pleasure might be reading one of Conan Doyle’s stories and solving the crime before the master detective himself.
