The book The Little Prince begins with a pilot crashing in a desert. There the man finds a strange child called the Little Prince, who hails from a tiny planet, which is just slightly bigger than a house. On the small planet, the Little Prince lives next to three small volcanoes, and a unique rose he treasures dearly. The Little Prince is full of curiosity about other worlds, and traveled to many planets before coming to the Earth. Coincidentally, he meets the stuck pilot, who seems able to satisfy most of his curiosity. Yet, it turns out that the boy teaches the pilot to see new aspects of the world.
The Little Princewas written and illustrated by French pilot and author Antoine de Saint-Exupery. It has sold over 140 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling books ever.
As well as being a charming tale for children, The Little Prince also contains a mature philosophy on life. An especially meaningful lesson in The Little Prince is “One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye.”

Born in 1900, Antoine de Saint-Exupery found his true calling when he was trained as a pilot at age 21. He first served as a mail pilot, working airmail routes in Europe, Africa, and South America. Later, he flew missions in World War II and then fled to America when France surrendered to the Nazis. In the US, he wrote The Little Prince and other works before returning to the war to fight the Nazis.
His adventurous life is reflected in The Little Prince. During his time in Africa, he crashed and had a four-day journey in the desert, which inspired the setting for the book. Some critics interpreted the unique rose as Saint-Exupery’s wife, Consuelo. Despite their stormy relationship, Saint-Exupery still cherished his wife.
The Little Prince was published in 1943. Sadly, Saint-Exupery never knew the far-reaching effects his book had. He took off on a mission in 1944 and never returned. His whereabouts remain a mystery, but the philosophy in The Little Prince echoes in readers’ hearts and reminds them of the innocence of their childhood.
