Imagine traveling across the barren, darkened landscape of Mordor with Frodo and Sam as you try desperately to avoid Sauron’s eye. You may be surprised to know what you can actually visit Mordor, for it is not just a made-up location in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. In fact, it is a real place in New Zealand! Many people are discovering the actual places behind the fictional ones in a relatively new industry called movie tourism.

New Zealand is full of locations which, thanks to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, have been made famous on the big screen. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to live underground as a hobbit, why not visit Hobbiton? It is situated in the rolling, green farmlands of Hinuera. Or go north to Kaitoke to see Rivendell, the majestic home of Arwen. Around 150 locations throughout New Zealand were used during the shooting of the LOTR trilogy.

In order to draw tourists, a country does not have to be a tropical paradise. Such is the case with the U.K. destinations appealing in the Harry Potter series. Lacock Abbey, located in Wiltshire, England, is the real-life Hogwarts for some of the movie’s interior scenes. Take a trip to the Abbey’s elegant halls and colorful gardens, and imagine enrolling in a wizard school with Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

Fans of the movie are drawn to the Big Horn Mountains to capture the spirit of this unforgettable love story.
