Traveling overseas is usually expensive, and hotel rooms can eat up a large part of one’s budget. However, staying somewhere on vacation doesn’t have to be costly. That’s where youth hostels come in. Generally, young backpackers occupy these small, inexpensive hotels. Owners traditionally made guests do chores during their stay, though many hostels no longer require this. German schoolteacher Richard Schirrmann created the first youth hostel in 1909 at his own school. He made the hostel because he wanted a cheap place for students to stay on class trips to the countryside.
Since then, the Hostelling International (HI) organization has grown to regulate more than 4,000 hostels worldwide. About 1.6 billion overnights have been spent in the organization’s hostels so far. HI sees this as a success story for affordable international travel, and hopes that through cultural exchanges in the hostels the world will be pushed into a new era. Travelers who stay in hostels get a great chance to share their travel stories and different ways of thinking with people from other nations. For many, staying in a youth hostel is an experience they never forget.
