On Dec. 26, 2004, the world woke up. When the Eurasian tectonic plate was thrust up thirty meters causing the massive earthquake that day, it also displaced millions of tons of seawater. The water spread out across the Indian Ocean, ravaging coastlines with two-story waves. That day, the world realized the power of tsunamis.
Earthquakes often cause tsunamis; however, when earthquakes trigger landslides that fall into the ocean, the splash can create huge waves more than 100 meters high known as “megatsunamis.” In 1958 in a small bay in Alaska, a landslide created a wave over 500 meters high! A fishing boat in the bay survived by riding the wave like a surfboard out to sea over trees and house-sized rocks.
Some geologists think a megatsunami like this could happen in the Atlantic Ocean within the next few thousand years. If the volcano on the island of La Palma off the coast of Africa comes to life, half the island might tumble into the sea. The resulting wave would be hundreds of meters high. It would spread out across the Atlantic and be big and powerful enough to destroy everything in its path up to 20 kilometers inland as far as North America.
Although not all scientists agree that this megatsunami will happen soon, the events of December 26 have raised awareness of the dangers of tsunamis. We can’t predict earthquakes or landslides, but better tsunami warning networks would alert us to these killer waves, giving people precious time to find higher ground.
