While visiting India, many travelers will find that one of its most appealing aspects is the food. Since 3000 BC, India Has been at the center of the spice trade world and some of these spices have found their way into traditional India food. Exotic ingredients, such as coriander and turmeric, help give Indian food its unique spicy flavor and ensure that what you are eating is not the ordinary fare. Moreover, many of the spices one encounters were chosen many years ago for their healing qualities, so the food is healthy, too!

Before you try your first dish, however, it is important to brush up on Indian table manners. First of all, Indians do not often use utensils. Eating with your hands is the preferred way to dine. Indians often use naan, a freshly-baked piece of steaming hot bread, to scoop their food.

Every region of this vast country hasdistinctive tastes and ways of preparing food. Daal is a yellowish stew of peas and beans that goes well with thinly-sliced bread and rice. Curries are a popular spiced dish mixed with either meat or vegetables. You will find many mouth-watering lamb and chicken dishes. Just do not expect to see an abundance of beef on the menu. The cow is a sacred animal in many parts of India. You are more likely to run into them delaying traffic on the highway than on your plate!

Darjeeling tea is one of the finest teas made in India. Its subtle taste and pleasant aroma have earned it the nickname “the champagne of teas.”

A cucumber salad covered in a light yogurt dressing will also provide some much-needed refreshment. So if your appetite is as big as the Taj Mahal, stop by an Indian restaurant and experience the fantastic food for yourself!
