Elinor and her sister Marianne live a good life in the English countryside. But their aging stepfather dies and by law must leave everything to his son, their stepbrother. The sisters receive little money and are forced to move. They are saddened by this news, especially Elinor as she had recently become close to a man named Edward Ferrars, a nephew of her stepfather.
爱莲娜和她的妹妹玛丽安在英国乡村过着不错的生活。但随着她们年迈的继父过世,于法他须将全部的财产留给儿子,即她们同父异母的哥哥。两姊妹拿了少许的钱,并被迫搬离。她们都因这个消息感到难过,特别是爱莲娜,由于她才刚和一名叫爱德华.费华士的男子变得很亲密,也就是她继父的侄子。
The sisters move in with their relatives and find that they enjoy their new home. Marianne encounters her cousin’s friend, a bachelor named Colonel Brandon, who begins to fall for her when he sees her musical talents. However, Marianne feels that he is far too old and rejects him.

One day, Marianne goes for a walk outside but it starts to rain. She slips and badlyt wists her ankle. A man named Willoughby, who was out hunting, sees her fall. He rushes over to Marianne and carries her back to her home. After that day, he visits Marianne often in order to chase her and she soon starts to develop a crush on him.

Marianne and Willoughby become so inseparable that everyone thinks the two might be secretly engaged. Yet, one day Willoughby informs Marianne that he has to move to London for business and that he will depart immediately. He is unsure if he will ever return, which leaves Marianne heartbroken.
玛丽安和韦勒比变得形影不离,以致所有人都认为他们可能秘密订婚了。然而有一天,韦勒比告知玛丽安,他因经商必须搬到伦敦,并且马上就会离开。他不确定是否会回来,这让玛丽安伤透了心。
After some time, Elinor receives a visit from Edward Ferrars. But, he seems unhappy, which makes Elinor worry. Some days later, at a family picnic, a distant relative named Lucy comes to visit. She inadvertently reveals that she has secretly been engaged to Edward for four years. Elinor is in shock and understands why Edward seemed unhappy when he saw her.

That winter, Elinor and Marianne decide to visit London to attend a party. They think it will be a great opportunity to find Willoughby. But when Marianne sees him at the party, Willoughby acts very cold and distant toward her. Marianne is distressed that he has changed so much and learns that he became engaged to another woman during his time in London.

On Elinor and Marianne’s way back home, they stop to visit some relatives. Marianne, still depressed, also becomes ill. Willoughby hears of this and visits Marianne. He reveals that he still loves her, but she feels they would have never been happy together. Meanwhile, Colonel Brandon arrives to care for her and she sees how devoted he is.
在爱莲娜和玛丽安回家的途中,她们顺道造访了一些亲戚。意志依然消沉的玛丽安也病了,韦勒比听到这个消息,便前来探望。他表明他还是爱着她,但她却觉得他们在一起的话永远不会快乐。同一时间,勃顿上校前来照顾她,她发现了他对自己的用情是多么地深。
In London, Edward’s mother is unhappy about his engagement to Lucy and disinherits him by giving the family fortune to his brother. To get the money, Lucy marries Edward’s brother instead, which makes Edward feel relieved that his foolish engagement is finally over.
在伦敦,爱德华的母亲对他跟露西的订婚婚约感到很不高兴,于是剥夺了他的继承权,将家族财产转移给弟弟。为了取得这笔钱,露西反倒嫁给了爱德华的弟弟。这件事让爱德华松了口气,他那荒谬可笑的婚约终于结束了。
Elinor and Marianne return home and learn that Lucy has already married “Mr. Ferrars,” which makes Elinor deeply sad. Before long, Edward arrives and reveals that Lucy actually married his brother, Robert Ferrars. Then Edward proposes to Elinor and she happily accepts with tears of joy. Similarly, Colonel Brandon proposes to Marianne. The two couples finally marry and live out their lives in happiness.
爱莲娜和玛丽安返家并得知露西已经跟「费华士先生」结婚了,这让爱莲娜极为难过。不久后,爱德华抵达,且表明露西其实是跟他弟弟罗伯特.费华士结婚。随后,爱德华便向爱莲娜求婚,而她也含着幸福的眼泪,开心接受了。同样地,勃顿上校也和玛丽安求婚了。这两对佳偶最后终成眷属,幸福地度过他们接下来的余生。
