Bulgaria, in Southeastern Europe, is home to many nationally loved animals like bears, storks, and vultures. However, these animals have been mistreated over the years. Fortunately, there are many efforts to preserve these species. Discovery’s Nature’s Keepers lets us explore how conservationists are protecting nature in Bulgaria.
The brown bear is one of Europe’s largest predators. In the past, the animal was used for entertainment at the circus. This no longer occurs, but the bears have lost a lot of their natural instincts and confidence. Nature’s Keepers follows a small conservation team in a park which provides a last refuge for these “dancing bears” of Bulgaria. The team helps the bears restore their body clock by encouraging hibernation. They also simulate wild conditions by placing food in a wooden tunnel, forcing the bears to obtain it on their own. This helps the bears learn how to live in the wild. Bulgaria adores its bears, to say the least, but also has concerns about other species.

A wild bird refuge center in the south of Bulgaria receives over 1,200 birds each year. Some 90 percent of them are brought to the center after being found near the road. One of the main birds at the center is the stork, which represents good luck to the people of Bulgaria. However, storks are sometimes the victims of high-voltage electrical wires and arrive at the center as patients. Luckily, there are many caring and responsible volunteers who use all their energy and skills to save the birds.
The animal lovers in Bulgaria also pay attention to rescuing the endangered vulture. Many hunters used to see the bird as a pest, as it ate dead animals, but it actually helps clean up the landscape and prevents the spread of infectious diseases. So, now the nation is keeping this special bird safe from harm and helping it breed at a stable rate. Bulgaria’s great effort to protect its beloved animals gives them a great chance to live on.
