In the African country of Botswana, dry winters last from June to August. The Okavango River floods during this season, pouring life into a dry land. Creatures large and small struggle to take advantage of this valuable water resource. The result is an amazing example of the circle of life. Since the Okavango River is full of wild and dangerous animals, it is a place humans have rarely witnessed.

Fortunately, TLC’s courageous film crews, who know how to avoid crocodiles and other deadly beasts, have captured amazing scenes of the river’s flood waters. The unique program, named Underwater Okavango, provides an up-close look at how winter floods transform an ecosystem.

When the waters first cover dry grasslands, they create a dark and muddy world. Bulldog fish and stone basher fish emit tiny electrical discharges to find food in the dark. Unfortunately for them, their discharges catch the attention of hungry, two-meter-long catfish. Then again, catfish are just a tasty snack for massive crocodiles. This food chain is just a snapshot of the eat-or-be-eaten world explored in Underwater Okavango.

Not all of the action on Underwater Okavango takes place under the surface. Case in point is the jacana bird, whose home is always on the move. The bird’s huge feet allow it to hop along the river on floating plants to eat insects. But these birds have to stay busy because the plants sink after a few seconds.

The channels of the flood waters are actually created by the larger species of the area. Hippos trample and eat their way through reeds, creating “hippo highways.” Some herds of elephants travel 100 kilometers just for a bath in the Okavango. Lions don’t like to play in the water, but they do take notice of any baby elephants that wander too far from their mothers.

Staying alive in the crowded environment of the Okavango is no walk in the park. As much as the river provides a pulse of life, it also creates an arena of deadly competition. Watch TLC’s Underwater Okavango to learn more about this amazing river habitat.
