The Boston Marathon, which began in 1897, is the oldest annual marathon and one of the most famous foot races in the world. It is held every Patriots’ Day, on the third Monday of April. Runners from all over the globe come to bustle over the hilly terrain of New England. The centennial race in 1996 attracted a world record 38,708 entrants. Boston’s marathon, along with those of London, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, and Tokyo, is one of the World Marathon Majors.
Along the 26.2 miles of the marathon, runners get the support of about 500,000 fans every year, almost five times the amount that can squeeze into the largest football stadiums. For many years, 61 to be exact, spectators saw the familiar face of John A. Kelley going by. He even completed the course in 1992 at the age of 84, and twice placed first in the race during his lifetime. More recently in 2011, Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai finished in Boston with the fastest marathon time in history, 2 hours and 3 minutes. Both men enhanced the glory of a race that continues its historic run.
