Data shows that dead zones in the oceans continue to increase. Researchers have identified 479 dead zones currently, with the largest ones near the US, Japan, and northern Europe. Fifty years ago there were only 49 identified ocean dead zones. The number has grown by over 977%. If the dead zones continue increasing at this rate, there will be over three thousand dead zones by 2060, the environmental group Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF) warned.
A dead zone is an area of water with less oxygen than normal, which kills sea life. Most dead zones are caused by global warming, fertilizer run off, overfishing, and pollution. These factors cause excessive algae growth. When the algae die, they use up oxygen in the water and release toxic gas.
Countless ocean organisms are lost to the dead zones each year, according to the famous magazine Scientific American. This greatly impacts the fishing industry and human populations that rely on seafood. The United Nations has promoted reducing industrial pollution to reverse the growth of dead zones.
