The LEGO robot in the European Space Operations Centre in Germany began to receive messages and then drive around last October. But the driver, who was operating the machine remotely, wasn’t in the building. She wasn’t even on the Earth.
About 240 miles above the planet, Sunita Williams was on the International Space Station, using a laptop to control the robot. Williams, a commander on the station, was using a new type of “Internet” that could one day work between different planets. The technology, developed by NASA and the European Space Agency, is called the Disruption Tolerant Network, or DTN. Because signals have to travel deep into outer space, sometimes they are delayed or disappear for a little while. This new type of Internet plans for these drops in signal between users, unlike the regular Internet connections we use on the Earth. Hence, it was given the name “disruption tolerant.”
With this new network, communication could improve with distant spacecraft and allow for missions farther away from the Earth.
