China recently opened the world’s longest high-speed route, which links Beijing with Guangzhou. Riders may now travel from the nation’s capital to its southern commercial city, a trip of 2,298 km, in about 8 hours at a maximum speed of 350 km/h. The trip by regular train takes about 22 hours. Ticket prices for the journey vary from roughly 865 to 2,727 yuan, with four classes of seating.
The new route includes 35 stops and will eventually connect with Hong Kong in 2015. The Ministry of Railways said it thinks the new line could complement old lines; with commuters opting to take the high-speed train, commercial freight could then use the freed-up older lines. The ministry said it sees the new line as a vital step in China’s national development.
In addition, China plans to continue building high-speed rail rapidly in order to accommodate its huge population and growing economy. Officials announced that there would be 16,000 km of such line by 2020. The country now has more than 9,000 km of high-speed rail in operation, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency.
