Food Waste in Hong Kong Causing Concern

Hong Kong is facing a serious, mounting problem: its landfills will likely be full within several years. The Tseung Kwan O (将军澳) landfill, one of the largest dumps in Hong Kong, could be full by 2015. Other landfills in the city are expected to max out by 2018.

The mountains of refuse are growing rapidly because of Hong Kong’s problem with throwing away food. It is estimated that the city wastes 3.6 million kilograms of food every day, which is about 40 percent of the food made daily.

Hong Kong is a city famous for its delicious cuisine. However, in response to the growing waste problem, the city is urging restaurants to better plan the amount of food they make. Private projects are joining the fight to curb the amount of food wasted. Carol Lin, an assistant professor at City University of Hong Kong, is creating her own biotechnology process that turns old bread into eco-friendly plastics and detergents. Whatever direction Hong Kong takes, it needs to proceed sooner rather than later to cope with the swelling piles of garbage.
