Japanese company Seiren has introduced a new product: underwear that eliminates the smell of flatulence and other unwelcome odors. The underwear, named “Deoest,” was originally developed for medical patients after a doctor requested Seiren to make something for people with irritable bowel syndrome. Yet, the smell-proof underwear is becoming a hit with everyday people because of their unique function.
The fibers of the underwear are woven together with odor-absorbing ceramic particles, Seiren claims the underwear kill off about 80 percent of gaseous odors within the first 30 seconds of their passing through the garment’s fibers. Deoest is also supposed to retain its ability to eliminate odors after more than 100 washes.
The technology for Deoest was invented by a Japanese university professor and Seiren now uses it on many of its products, including T-shirts and socks. Although the company first considered selling the underwear only to hospital patients, they found that Deoest is popular with businessmen, who often sit in long meetings and are not able to get up and leave the room. However, this new product may offer people more flexibility when they find themselves at an important occasion.
