The skeleton of a man found under a parking lot in Leicester, England has been confirmed as the remains of King Richard III. Archaeologists found the bones in late 2012 when they hunted for the king, who died at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.
Underneath a modern-day parking lot diggers unearthed what was once the Church of Greyfriars, where Richard III was reportedly buried. There they found the parts of a man who died in battle and suffered from a deformed spine, just as Richard III had. The overwhelming evidence led researchers to assume that these were the bones of the king. To remove all doubt, DNA samples from one of Richard’s living descendants were compared with the remains. The samples were a match.
Subsequent kings, and even William Shakespeare, portrayed Richard III as a tyrant. This significant finding has already caused many historians to rethink traditional views about this disgraced king.
