In a major eco-friendly move, 2,800 supermarkets in the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets created a deal with the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office to ban beef linked to the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.
The ban is a sign of progress to environmentalists. According to the environmental group Greenpeace, expansion of the cattle industry in the Amazon is the single biggest cause of deforestation in the region. Currently, about 62 percent of the area destroyed each year in the rainforest becomes cattle pastures.
Public Prosecutor Daniel Cesar Azeredo Avelino stated consumers would agree with the deal because it helps preserve the rainforest. “The agreement foresees a series of specific actions to inform the consumer about the origin of the meat both through the Internet and at the supermarkets,” he said. Mr. Avelino expressed that a more transparent labeling system would also make it easier for consumers to avoid buying meat from the Amazon, and make it harder for shops to sell items from producers who flouted the law.
