Ancient City Found in Cambodia’s Jungles 柬埔寨千年古城现身

Deep in the jungles of Cambodia, researchers put some new technology to the test and came up with a startling discovery: they found Mahendraparvata, an ancient city that was hidden for about a thousand years. The lost city was part of a powerful empire that controlled region from the 9^th to the 13^th century.

Archaeologists found the city with Lidar, which penetrates dense trees using lasers sent from a helicopter to measure and create a three-dimensional map. After collecting the data, archaeologists revealed the lost city on a mountain near Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s most famous ruins. They are now exploring Mahendraparvata on foot in the dense jungle.

Archaeologists believe that the once hidden city is the oldest one in Cambodia, and that the city was built 350 years earlier than Angkor Wat. It’s still unclear why Mahendraparvata fell into ruin. Researchers will continue to study the mysterious city to find more clues about the lives of the ancient Cambodians.
