South Korean doctors are concerned about an increase in ‘digital dementia’ among young people due to overuse of digital video devices. The condition is marked by memory problems, attention disorders, and emotional difficulties. These symptoms are similar to those caused by head injuries.
Dr. Byun Gi-won, an expert at the Balance Brain Center in Seoul, blames digital dementia on the high use of smartphones in his country. In 2012, researchers found that young people there spent an average of four hours a day using their mobile phones. South Korea is one of the world’s most wired countries and doctors there have previously warned the public about Internet addiction in teens and adults.
Since young people’s brains are still developing, they are at a higher risk than adults of suffering from digital dementia. Unfortunately, doctors still have much to learn about the condition and have not found an effective treatment. Therefore, doctors recommend that young people moderate the amount of time they spend using their mobile devices and personal computers.
