With one of his signature swings this summer, Ichiro Suzuki recorded his 4,000th hit in a professional baseball game. Fans chanted his name and his New York Yankee teammates left the dugout to give the Japanese-born player high fives and parts on the back. Suzuki bowed to all sides, even to his opponents, the Toronto Blue Jays.
The skilled batter began building his massive hit total in the Japanese Pacific League, where he recorded 1,278 hits in nine seasons. He moved to Major League Baseball in 2001 to play for the Seattle Mariners. In 2004 he set the mark for most hits in a season with 262, which broke an 84-year-old record.
Suzuki has already secured himself a spot in the baseball Hall of Fame with his stellar play in Seattle. But he is now part of an elite trio with Pete Rose and Ty Cobb as the only players with 4,000 professional hits. Yankees coach and former All-Star player Joe Girardi marveled at Suzuki’s achievement and said, “I didn’t have 4,000 hits my whole career going back to T-ball.”
