Mike Wazowski, a green monster with gangly legs and one large eye, is 17 years old and dreams of becoming a professional “scarer.” He enrolls in Monsters University, where many of the scariest monsters have trained. There he shares a dorm room with Sulley, the big man in campus and a born scarer. Sulley, however, doesn’t think Mike will ever be an effective monster. The two monsters compete fiercely against each other to get into the university’s coveted scaring program. This confrontation causes their ongoing feud to become too intense though, and eventually they’re both kicked out of the School of Scaring. Interestingly, the unlikely duo must team up to get back into the school and graduate from Monsters University.
The plot of Pixar’s new film is set ten years before Monsters Inc., the 2001 film that introduced Mike and Sulley. This time though, the film hopes to shed some light on the pair’s first encounter and how they overcome their differences and become long-lasting friends. Audiences will see what innocent monsters go through on that scary journey from life at home to a big university.

Monsters University is a prequel to its 2001 predecessor, showing viewers what life is like for a monster in college. It’s also Pixar’s first feature-length prequel, though the studio has been planning to make Monsters University since 2005. Employees at Pixar toured top universities in the US, including Harvard, MIT, and UC-Berkeley, for their research and even copied the schools’ websites and commercials. The Monsters University website imitates those of American universities down to the last detail, from campus maps, stories about professors, to the history of the university. Pixar also ran commercials on television, mildly spoofing similar ads aired by real universities which aim to recruit students.
To give some insight about campus life, Pixar shows viewers how monsters in the university experience many of the same activities as students at American universities. The college-aged monsters join fraternities and sororities, make new friends, party late into the night, and must compete with each other to get into their desired programs. Monsters University promises to transport viewers to the hilarious and frightening world of these young monsters as they try their best to grow up.
