Last month, I spent two weeks on my group report for geography class. It was a painstaking process, but the good news is … I got a good grade! Shortly afterwards, my team member, Jessica, came to me and asked if she could treat me to dinner. Of course that’s a big YES! But little did I know Dad would ruin our plan. When I told Dad about it, he said I shouldn’t let somebody buy me anything. I explained that Jessica only wanted to do it because she appreciated my hard work. But then, he scolded me for handing teamwork poorly. Why? Why is he so hard to communicate with?
Another thing is that a lot of the girls are going to the street-dancing class after school. I REALLY want to go too, but Mom doesn’t approve. She thinks I should stay home and sharpen my piano skills instead. EEK! I just want my parents to be more liberal and give me a little freedom. Am I really asking too much?

Bridging the Generation Gap
Most young people think their parents simply hold everything against them, while parents consider kids to be rebellious. Communication problems like these usually occur because, in essence, different generations think in different ways. However, easing the situation is not so difficult after all. There are a few ways you can bring about some peace.
One good way is to sit down and talk about the matter. You may have apoint of view quite different from that of your parents, but every view is valid. Finding a time to exchange your opinions with no interruptions is the key. Trying to talk when the TV is on is never a good idea. If direct communication seems difficult, how about writing a letter? This makes you think calmly about the problem and helps parents understand your feelings. Creating unity with family members is also important for bridging the gap between both sides. You can talk, listen, and respond to each other more through cooking or playing video games together. Overall, being open about everything can help you respect each other’s differences.
