You are getting very, very sleepy …….. Sound familiar? No, it’s not what you tell yourself during math class; it’s the classic line spoken by a hypnotist to his subject. Many of us have seen a master hypnotist on stage as he makes people act like a chicken (or some such nonsense). But did you know that hypnosis is also used seriously by therapists and physicians?

The term hypnosis was coined by a British physician and derived from the Greek word “hypnos,” or sleep. This special “sleep” has proven efficacious in the treatment of a multitude of disorders, including depression, overeating, headaches, skin irritations, and even chronic pain. Interestingly, the hypnotic method is quite simple to master. All one needs is a soothing voice and a willing subject. In fact, the key to success is the person being hypnotized. The very old and the very young (and of course the unwilling), though, make poor subjects.

Nobody knows exactly or why hypnosis works, but part of the answer seems to lie in the fact it helps patients relax. There is also likely some sort of placebo effect happening.

If you want to give hypnosis a try, you can always begin with yourself. It’s quite easy, but don’t expect miracles to happen. You cannot hypnotize yourself into losing weight while you’re holding a chocolate bar in your hand!
