Are birds and dinosaurs related? Is there life in outer space and would it be possible to live there in the future? Can man continue to coexist with animals and preserve their natural habitats for generations to come? For over 150 years, the Smithsonian has also made it its mission to answer questions such as these.

The Smithsonian is composed of 17 museums and the National Zoo – home to over 2,400 animals – in Washington, D.C. Two more museums are located in New York City. Each displays selected items from the Smithsonian’s collection of over 136 million objects. It helps educate the public about the past and allows great minds to push into the future. It acts as a living storybook about the world and beyond. Millions of people eagerly explore its museums each year and anxiously look forward to each new exhibit. However, more than anything, it is the first page in the Smithsonian’s history that has made it such a unique institution.

When British scientist James Smithson passed away in 1829, he left his fortune to his only nephew. He stated, however, that should his nephew die without an heir, the fortune would go to the United States for the promotion of knowledge. As fate would have it, Smithson’s nephew dies six years later without an heir and his fortune – equal to over 9 million dollars in today’s currency – was shipped to the U.S. That money was used to create the Smithsonian Institution.

From 1838 to 1842, the United States Exploring Expedition was busy collecting thousands of specimens, including more than 50,000 plants, shells, minerals, and birds. Curators at the Smithsonian Institution used these items for display and research in the Smithsonian’s first building, nicknamed “the Castle.”

Today, the Smithsonian has grown into a variety of museums highlighting everything from American to African history, the evolution of buildings and industries, and advances in space research and technology. The Smithsonian also funds several research centers, which have become magnets for researchers from all over the world. For people unable to participate directly, the Smithsonian Magazine offers the next best thing. It publishes in-depth looks at the Smithsonian’s new exhibits and groundbreaking discoveries. All of this was made possible by the dream of one man and the diligent work of those who ceaselessly seek knowledge.
