April, a salesperson at an appliance store, approaches Doug, a customer:
A: Good afternoon. Are you interested in this microwave oven?
D: Yup. If you don’t want to get irradiated, you’d better stand back while I test it!
A: Oh, that’s just a story someone cooked up. This model is perfectly safe and powerful too.
D: So, it’ll cook food much faster than conventional ovens?
A: Definitely. As a regular oven heats up, the hot, fast-moving molecules in the air struggle to penetrate the cold, slow-moving molecules in the food.
D: And I suppose that’s why my roast meats are always rarest in the middle?
A: Yeah. But microwaves work completely differently, as you can see in this pamphlet.
D: Oh, I get it! Microwaves ovens emit very-high-frequency radio waves which penetrate the food instantly.
A: That’s right. Microwaves pass right through most things, until they encounter molecules that are good absorbers of energy.
D: I had noticed that they cook juicy and fatty foods much faster than other foods.
A: That’s true. Some molecules, like water and fat, are better absorbers of microwaves than others. So, will you take this model?
D: Hmmm – I’m still a bit concerned by all the humming and whirring.
A: Don’t worry, that’s just a metal fan.
D: Really? I’m becoming a microwave fan myself. I’ll take it!
