Polly runs into her co-worker Harvey at an Internet café:
H: Gosh, these search engines are quick. My search of the Web only took 0.09 seconds.
P: Actually, search engines don’t search the entire Web, only their own databases. For example, Google, which claims to have the largest index, has a database of over three billion pages.
H: How can they build up such a phenomenal database? It must be automated.
P: There are human-powered directories, but most search engine databases are built by programs called “spiders.” These automated programs crawl through the Web, “read” a webpage, and follow its links to other pages. Then they pass the pages to another program for indexing.
H: Spiders couldn’t possibly crawl the entire Web, so there must be loads of sites that aren’t listed.
P: Absolutely. Search engines present the “visible” Web, but it’s estimated that the “invisible” Web is two or three times bigger.
H: Very mysterious. Back to the visible Web, I can guess the next part: search engine software sifts through the billions of pages in the index to find matches by keyword or whatever, and then it ranks the results in order of relevancy.
P: How each engine determines relevancy is top secret, however.
H: I’m just hoping your phone number isn’t top secret!
