Thomas and Maggie are on a dinner date. Thomas is signing the check:
M: Hey, I didn’t know you were left-handed!
T: Yep. I’m sinister – that’s the Latin word for left!
M: You don’t seem sinister to me. But during dinner you ate with your right.
T: In a right-handed world, it pays for southpaws to be ambidextrous.
M: I guess you’re “right.” Isn’t true ambidexterity rare?
T: Yeah. Most people gravitate towards doing certain tasks with a specific hand. I write with my left, but hold my fork with my right – depends on what I’m doing.
M: I guess handedness is a continuum, but what makes most people righties?
T: No one’s sure. Some point to the brain’s hemisphere. Since speaking and manual tasks both require fine motor skills, having the same hemisphere in control might be more efficient.
M: And since speech is a left-brain trait in most people, it follows that most are right-handed.
T: “Right” again. But don’t discount the effect of education and learning by example. Children are most often shown how to do tasks by right-handers.
M: Good point. In Taiwan, until recently, kids were encouraged to write with their right hands because writing Chinese characters is easier that way.
T: Fortunately, both hands are good for taking a moonlight stroll, eh?
