Computer users get it. So do meat packers, cashiers, secretaries, draftsmen, assembly-line workers, and musicians. What could people from such a diverse array of occupations have in common? The answer: carpal tunnel syndrome, or CTS.
A painful and debilitating condition, CTS most commonly arises when people perform repetitive hand movements for long stretches at a time. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist, through which run tendons. But it also houses the median nerve, which controls sensation in the fingers and the movement of various hand muscles.
Repetitive hand motion can put stress on the tendons, causing them to swell and press on the median nerve, which in turn leads to tingling, numbness, pain, and impaired movement in the hands and fingers.
Although repeated hand movement is the biggest culprit, anything that puts pressure on the median nerve can trigger CTS; thus, swelling brought on by conditions such as pregnancy or rheumatoid arthritis can also effect the disorder.
The good news is that CTS is treatable with early detection. So, if you have wrist pain, or any of the aforementioned symptoms, see a doctor now, before it gets out of hand. It could mean the difference between a speedy recovery and lifelong disability.

Aspiring novelist Miranda is at her computer, when her husband, Samuel, enters the room:
S: Miranda, you’ve been banging away at that thing all day, for months on end.
M: I’m trying to complete my book.
S: But you’re all hunched up, your wrists are bend — you’re a prime candidate for carpal tunnel syndrome.
M: Oh, you’re such a worrywart—although, I’ll admit, my fingers have been tingling lately.
S: Honey, maybe it’s time you started paying more attention to ergonomics.
M: Huh? But I’m gearing up for the climax!
S: The book won’t go anywhere! Look, your feet are twisted; they should be flat on the floor, with your knees bent ninety degrees.
M: I thought it was all to do with the wrists.
S: Which is another thing: that “thick” keyboard makes you bend your wrists unnecessarily; that’s one of the most common causes of CTS.
M: OK, I’ll adjust my chair and use a wrist support, but then it’s back to the grind.
S: Not so fast. It’s imperative you take a breather for at least five minutes every hour.
M: That’s not productive: it’ll interfere with my tempo!
S: Miranda, I suggest you take the possibility of developing CTS a little more seriously—unless you want to be dictating your next novel.
