Rod notices that his coworker Iris is sitting with her head in her hands:
R: Iris, what’s wrong? Has someone upset you?
I: No! I’m just closing my eyes for a few minutes: it’s a kind of exercise for preventing computer vision syndrome. The hands ensure complete darkness.
R: Ah, CVS – you get it from staring at computer screens all day, right?
I: That’s the one! It affects million of office workers all over the world. Just a couple of hours a day sat in front of a computer is all it takes.
R: It’s probably because it’s so hard for our eyes to maintain focus on backlit characters; our eye muscles have to work overtime.
I: Eye strain – that’s what it is, and that’s why I’ve taken up a new work regimen: I now punctuate my work day with two minutes of eye-relaxation exercises every twenty minutes.
R: Well, if my headaches, blurred vision, and dry eyes are anything to go by, I’ve got CVS; I could do with learning some of those techniques.
I: I’d be happy to teach you some preventative measures, but you’ll have to wait a minute; I’m only halfway through this exercise.
R: No problem, teacher. You tend to those two pupils; they are here first!

Iris finished her eye-relaxation exercise:
I: Ah! There you are – my eyes feel great after that.
R: So, what was it you were doing?
I: It’s called “palming.” The idea is to gently roll your eyeballs around complete darkness so there’s nothing to focus on.
R: Because they’ve been trying to focus at the same distance for long periods, right? What else should I do?
I: Try periodically looking at things around the room or out the window. Spotting things of the same color works pretty well for me.
R: Sounds like good advice – thanks. And I think I’ve spotted a way of helping you, too: your monitor needs adjusting.
I: How do you mean? I’ve lowered the brightness and fitted an anti-reflective screen.
R: It’s the ergonomics; you need to have the monitor directly facing you, roughly sixty centimeters from your face, and with the center about fifteen centimeters below eye level. Here, allow me.
I: Thanks, Rod. I guess that’s why I was having neck-and shoulder pains. And I have a gift for you: artificial tears. Along with remembering to blink more, a couple of drops will help with those dry eyes of yours.
R: Great! Thank you, Iris. Now that’s what I call a sight for sore eyes!
