Max and Nerida are cousins catching up at a family function:
N: That gut of yours reminds me of the universe!
M: Why’s that?
N: It seems to be constantly expanding.
M: Well, the older you get, the harder it is to control your weight by simply watching what you eat, you know?
N: Have you tried exercising at all?
M: Gyms aren’t my scene. I’d jog more often, but it hurts my knees.
N: How about walking? Walking is gentle on the knees, and a brisk half-hour walk can burn almost two hundred and fifty calories.
M: Really? That’s about a tenth of a man’s average daily calorie intake.
N: Yes, it is. In addition, walking strengthens the heart, bones and muscles, lower blood pressure, and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke.
M: It’s probably as effective as any other exercise. After all, the heart is a muscle, and anything that makes blood flow faster through a muscle helps keep that muscle in good shape.
N: A half-hour stroll, at a reasonably vigorous pace, five or six times a week, is all it takes to improve your fitness level.
M: Will three ten-minute walks a day deliver the same benefits?
N: Certainly. In terms of preventative health care, nothing tops a daily walk.
