J: I’m celebrating the success of my weight loss regimen.

D: With a barbecue? You’ll just fall off the wagon and put all the weight back on!

J: No, I’ve learned to eat sensibly. At the party, I can have a hamburger if I hold the mayo; I can drink soda, as long as it’s lite.

D: Did they teach you that at the weight loss clinic?

J: Yep. Eating sensibly is just part of the “slimming cocktail” my doctor prescribed.

D: Booze helped you slim down? Count me in on your party!

J: FYI, “cocktail slimming” refers to the combining of different weight loss methods. Instead of just dieting, I take a drug called Orlistat, get messages to stimulate fat burning – and, of course, I exercise. Now my body mass index – or BMI– is coming right down.

D: Hmm. One-point-six … All right, what does twenty-five mean?

D: Then you should stock up on diet soda, because that’s all I’ll be drinking at your barbecue!

It isn't over until the fat lady sings.

It ain't over till (or until) the fat lady sings is a colloquialism. It means that one should not presume to know the outcome of an event which is still in progress. More specifically, the phrase is used when a situation is (or appears to be) nearing its conclusion. It cautions against assuming that the current state of an event is irreversible and clearly determines how or when the event will end. The phrase is most commonly used in association with organized competitions, particularly sports.

Deanna meets up with James after her appointment at the weight loss clinic:  迪安娜在看过减重门诊后和詹姆士碰面：

J: You look like your dog just died!

妳看起来像是爱犬刚死了一样！

D: I’m disappointed. I was hoping the specialist would mix some Orlistat into my “slimming cocktail.”

J: Drugs like Orlistat are only for the obese. Besides, they’re not all they’re cracked up to be. I had to stop taking Orlistat last week because of a myriad of side effects from constipation to ---

那种奥利斯拓减肥药是给真正过重的病人使用，而且它们的效果有时并不如预期。上周我就必须停用奥利斯拓，因为它有一大堆副作用，像是便秘这些…

D: Enough! I just like the idea of instant results. But the doctor said that realistically, I should only aim to lose half-a-kilo a week.

J: Look at it this way: even though you’ll have to wait a little longer, if you lose the weight slowly, you’ll be less likely to suffer the “yo-yo” effect.

D: I know. Starving my body of nutrients would result in lowering mymetabolism.

J: And any unnecessary calories you consume will be promptly stored for a rainy day. Then, if you return to your old eating habits, you’d gain the weight back.

D: And then some. That’s why exercise is a big ingredient in my cocktail. It raises my metabolism while I’m dieting.
