R: Hey, Why’s that referee watching TV during the game?

P: He’s checking the instant replay to make sure he made the right call.

R: But I thought only the NFL had instant replay.

P: Not anymore: in summer, the NBA decided that officials can use them now.

R: Like Baron Davis’s disallowed three-pointer against Orlando during last season’s play-offs?

P: Exactly. If they’d had instant replay then, that shot would’ve counted.

没错。如果那时他们有实时回放，那球就会改判算进了。

 

R: Will they use instant replay throughout the game, like in NFL games?

NBA跟NFL一样，整场球赛都能用实时回放吗？

 

P: Nope, it’ll only be used for last-second calls at the end of quarters or games, and only by referee—coaches can’t call for them.

不行，只有在每节或比赛结束前，倒数几秒内的判决才可以使用，而且也只有裁判有权利使用──教练是不可以提出要求的。

 

R: What about if a player had his foot on the three-point line when taking a shot?

如果有球员投三分球时脚踩在三分在线呢？

 

P: Yep. Referees can also use it to see if they called a foul before time expired. They can’t use it to look for fouls that weren’t called, though.

可以。裁判也可以看回放来确认他们吹的犯规是不是在时间终了前吹的。但是他们不可以用回放来找找看有没有他们该吹而没吹的犯规。

 

R: I think it’s a great idea; I wish we had instant replay in class.

我觉得这主意很赞。但愿我们班上也有实时回放。

 

P: What in the world are you talking about?

你在胡说什么？

 

R: Last week my teacher said I was late, but actually I wasn’t—believe me, I know how Baron Davis feels!
