Do you ever wake up from a night’s sleep feeling like you haven’t slept at all? Does the snooze button on your alarm clock suffer from overuse? When you get to the bathroom mirror, do you see a tired-looking grump with severe bedhead staring back at you? Maybe it’s time for you to get an alarm clock that is more sensitive to your needs.
During the night, you go through different cycles of sleep. Each cycle repeats approximately every ninety minutes. The stage of sleep you are in when you wake up can directly influence how you feel all day. So along comes SleepSmart. It’s an alarm clock that records your brain waves with an electronic headband you wear to sleep. SleepSmart recognizes when you are at your lightest phase of sleep before the time you have set for waking up. It then rings its alarm to wake you.
Sleep-deprived students at a Rhode Island university invented the product after performing poorly on tests. They plan to market the product by next year. News of SleepSmart’s forthcoming release has excited much debate on Internet bulletin boards. Sleep is essential to good health, so you can’t truly be healthy unless you sleep well. Will products like SleepSmart lead to changes in the way we rest? That’ll depend on its effectiveness. If it helps chase away those morning blues, its popularity is assured.
