Martine is visiting the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Egypt; Ahmed is her guide:
M: It says here these artifacts were recently found in the tomb of a high priest.
A: Thankfully, they weren’t pilfered by tomb raiders.
M: But apparently everything else was—where’s the coffin?
A: Not everyone was buried in a solid gold sarcophagus like King Tut was. The coffin rotted; it was made of wood.
M: How could that be? The Nile Valley’s as dry as a bone!
A: Not anymore: Ever since the Aswan High Dam was build, it’s been possible to control the flooding of the Nile; as a result, farmers’ fields are staying moist all year around.
M: So the water in the ground is somehow getting into ancient tombs and causing things to decay?
A: In a sense: moisture is seeping into the rock beneath the desert, causing humidity levels to rise.
M: And the humidity is causing anything organic to rot.
A: That’s what the archaeologists reckon, anyway. When they were searching for this guy’s coffin, all they were greeted with was a pile of dust.
M: Are they sure it wasn’t just a bad case of termites?
A: I wish it were that simple! Then we could just call in the exterminators and save our treasures.
