What do Madonna and 1.5 million Americans have in common? Stumped? They’ve all been terrorized by stalkers. Stalkers relentlessly harass their victims by following them around, making persistent phone calls, and sometimes threatening violence. Although few stalkers actually commit violent crimes, the harassment is enough to seriously disrupt the victims’ lives.

Stalk has only recently been made a criminal offense, so relatively little is known about the motives of stalkers. Generally, stalkers are former boyfriends or husbands of the victims, but they can also be casual acquaintances, disgruntled employees or even complete strangers. Those who stalk their ex-lovers show symptoms of personality disorders, such as a constant need for the attention and approval of others. Some stalkers suffer from psychiatric disorders like depression or schizophrenia.

Victims of stalking live a nightmare of paranoia. The aggravation of being constantly followed may lead many victims to change their identities, move away or even to commit suicide. Victims should end all contact with the stalker because any response, whether good or bad, can be construed as attention by a stalker. Another way to prevent stalking is simple to be firm when ending a relationship. For even greater safety, you may wish to keep your personal information private to help ensure that stalking never happens to you.
遭跟踪的受害人则生活在妄想症的梦魇中。不断地被跟踪骚扰，常导致受害人变更身份、迁移住所、甚至自杀。被害人应完全断绝与跟踪者的任何接触。因为无论响应是友善还是不友善，跟踪者都可能解读为一种注意他的表示。另外一种反跟踪之道则是：冷静坚决地结束一段恋情。若要更进一步确保自身安全，个人资料最好保持隐密，以完全避免遭到跟踪。
