课文讲解
When most people hear the name Jeff Locker, they think of a radio DJ. But there’s more to this Asian transplant than his golden voice. The Yale University graduate has always been interested in Asian culture, and after his first visit to Taiwan in 1991, he knew he had found his second home. Starting out as an English teacher at a Taipei bushiban, Jeff soon expanded his language immersion into the realm of radio, television and books.
当多数人听到杰夫的名字就会想到电台DJ。但他这个移居亚洲的奇葩可不是只有迷人的嗓音而已。自耶鲁大学毕业的杰夫一直对亚洲文化有兴趣,而自从在1991年初访台湾之后,他知道他找到了第二个家。一开始杰夫在台北补习班教英文,不久即把他密集运用语言的领域扩展到电台、电视和书籍。
His observation of Taiwanese students has let him to conclude that, despite studying English for years, many of them still find it difficult to speak the language. Jeff suggests that they concentrate more on speaking and less on memorizing vocabulary. “Language is not just words; not just grammar. It’s getting to understand the culture,” he says. Just as a skyscraper needs a strong foundation, to be fluent in English requires a working knowledge of the conversational basics. By emphasizing conversational skills, we find that studying becomes easier, more enjoyable, and ultimately more fruitful, says Jeff.
对台湾学生的观察让他得到一个结论,即虽然他们花了好几年学英文,许多人仍对说英语感到困难。杰夫建议他们多专心在说英语而不是猛背单字。他说:「语言不是只有单字和文法而已,而是要去了解它的文化。」如同万丈高楼要有稳固的基础,要想流畅说英语就要具备会话基础的实用知识。杰夫说,藉由强调会话技巧,学英文变得更简单更有趣,最后也会更有成果。
