Web 2.0 has made it easier for everyone to share their words, photos, and music with the world. Like many Internet innovations, it has revolutionized global communications beyond what people thought would happen. Still, if you were impressed by Web 2.0, hold on to your hat. Get ready for Web 3.0.
The wide expanse of theories and ideas behind Web 3.0 will, if realized, change not only how we communicate, but how we live. Think of it as convenience brought to a whole new level. It will be an era where machines operate independently of man, and all of our lives are made easier.
Imagine if your computer could find the nearest doctor to where you live and then book an appointment that fits perfectly into your schedule. Or how about a microwave oven that can consult the maker of your microwave pizza’s website for cooking instructions? What about stereos and appliances that can automatically turn their own volume down when the phone rings? With Web 3.0, it could all be possible.
Right now, web pages are designed to be read by people, not machines. Web 3.0, or the Semantic Web, aims to make web pages understandable by computers. Once computers are linked with appliances and other various hardware, they will understand them and could potentially perform a large number of actions independent of the user.

What would this mean to you? Well, Web 3.0 could also usher in a whole new, highly-intelligent way to search the web. Just imagine the following situation: Greg has heard on short notice that his best friend from high school is getting married on the other side of the country. He wants to go, but his work schedule gives him very little free time. In addition, he has little disposable income, and would like to travel on the cheap. He also needs to rent a car, book a hotel, and so on.
The Semantic Web would be able to look at his work schedule, bank balance, and other aspects of his life if necessary. It could then compose a suitable list of flights. Next, it could find a suitable car rental agency based on Greg’s situation, and locate nearby hotels with vacancies on the days he needs. Theoretically, it could even set up a detailed timetable for Greg. All of this with just one simple search! In other words, something complicated and time-consuming suddenly becomes much simpler.
Tim Berners-Lee, regarded by many as the father of the Internet, has said a Web that interacts with machines would be “devastatingly powerful.” Yet one can’t help but feel enthusiastic when someone like Berners-Lee says that “The Web is only going to get more revolutionary.” Behold, here comes the revolution.
