Where can you see 1,000 years of history in 100 minutes? The microstate Luxembourg has forts and castles dating back to the 9th century against a green backdrop of rolling hills. Although its area is twelve times smaller than that of Taiwan, it is one of the economic powerhouses of modern day Europe.
Bordering France, Germany, and Belgium, Luxembourg serves as a crossroads for widely varying European cultures. Luxembourgers retain their unique identity by having the only remaining grand duchy, which is a territory ruled by a grand duke. When speaking, they may switch from Luxembourgish to French, to German, depending on which language best expresses the main idea. The mixture of cultures is also evident in their cuisine. Some say that Luxembourg’s food is French cooking with German-sized portions!
Since its capital Luxembourg City was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, countless tourists have flocked to the city each year. The unique mixture of German, French and Spanish architecture is best seen by taking the famous “110-minute” Wenzel walk. Among Luxembourg’s man bridges, one of the grandest is the Grand Duke Adolphe Bridge. Its graceful stone arch rises over the lush Petrusse Valley.
With banking law that keep investors’ information strictly secret, Luxembourg has developed into a major world banking hub. Although nearly invisible on the world map, Luxembourg’s cultural and financial significance makes it a shining star in Europe.
