D: Taiwan’s teas are world-famous, but this one is the best I’ve ever tasted.

W: The only problem is deciding which of Taiwan’s teas to drink. With seven of Taiwan’s seventeen counties producing tea, there’s a lot of choice.

D: This Tungting tea is from the township of Luku. I understand that Luku produces more tea than any other township in Taiwan.

D: What makes Luku’s tea so good?

W: The area is perfect for tea cultivation: cool air, abundant rain, fertile soil, and warm sunshine.

D: It’s no wonder tea from there is so delicious …. and expensive.

W: Just a few years ago, special grade Luku tea could go for up to NT$50,000 a catty!

D: Luckily for us tea aficionados, prices have dropped.

W: Let’s take a trip to Nantou County next weekend to see what’s so special about Luku.

D: Isn’t Luku near where the 921 earthquake struck Taiwan?

W: Yeah. Earthquakes and typhoons have hit Nantou hard in the recent past, but Luku’s tea production has bounced back.

W: Luku is so quaint. The dappled light of the bamboo groves gives it real “bambience.”

D: Ohh, bad pun. The landscape is delightful, but I think the rich, fragrant aroma of oolong tea that permeates the whole area is the best thing about Luku.

W: While you slept in, I spoke to a farmer who told me all about the local tea-making process.

D: I know that tea leaves are dried and fermented in bamboo frames after they’ve been plucked, but is there anything special about Luku’s process?

W: Well, he was telling me that oolong is a semi-fermented tea, so the fermenting has to be stopped by quickly heating the tea at exactly the right time to keep it from losing its floral fragrance and flavor.

D: Next the farmers shape, grade, cure, and finally package the tea, right?

W: You got it! It’s a lot of work.

D: Quite. I’ll just drink the tea and leave the rest to the locals!

W: The farmer I spoke with invited us to enjoy a homestay with his family, and try one of Luku’s famous tea meals.

D: Great! This is our chance to sample Luku’s other specialties: bamboo shoots and mountain celery.
