In Doraemon, characters eat it to speak and understand any language. Everyone else eats it for another reason. Konjac is a peculiar plant with lots of health benefits, and its popularity is growing throughout the world.
Konjac is native to Indonesia, Japan and China. Its brown corm, similar in shape to a radish, sprouts a brown plant. A large, dark leaf wraps around its base. With its strange appearance, Konjac has earned nicknames such as voodoo lily, snake palm, and devil’s tongue!
The first documented use of Konjac as a source of food in China and Japan dates back to the 6th century. It was recognized that eating the plant’s corm improved people’s health. Since then, Konjac has been proven to be very low in fat, with practically no calories. It is also a perfect diet food because it expands in the stomach and provides a feeling of fullness.
Konjac is usually sold as a gelatinous, grey, square with black speckles and a bland taste. However, it is a versatile food, since it absorbs the flavors of whatever is cooked with it! Served as noodles with pasta sauce or in soup, it makes a delightful treat. It can also be made into bite-sized fruit jelly snacks or even used as a substitute for the “pearls” in pearl milk tea.
Konjac is rich in minerals and full of fiber. Its fiber can reduce cholesterol and prevent high blood pressure. With all of these benefits, no wonder people are flocking to markets to pick up this perennial treat!
