On September 18th, 1851, the first edition of The New York Times announced, “We publish today the first issue, and we intend to issue it every morning for an indefinite number of years to come.” For more than 150 years, The New York Times has kept that promise, faithfully reporting “all the news that’s fit to print.” From the American Civil War to the terrorist attacks of September 11th, The New York Times has chronicled one of mankind’s most remarkable and tumultuous periods.
1851年九月十八日，纽约时报的创刊宣言为：「现在我们发行了第一刊，将来无数个早晨，我们仍会持续发行。」的确，一百五十多年来，纽约时报仍信守承诺，忠实报导「值得报导的新闻」。从美国南北战争到911恐怖攻击事件，纽约时报记录了全人类最引人注目、最纷扰的时期。
The New York Timeshas a colorful history. Through its fearless reporting of the Civil War, the Times become the most popular newspaper in the United States. In 1871, a series of Times exposés helped end the corrupt reign of “Boss” William Tweed, who controlled New York City. The paper sponsored Robert Peary’s 1909 expedition to the North Pole, and was the first to report the sinking of the Titanic. TheTimes was also involved in several landmark legal decisions that ensured freedom of the press in the United States.

Today, The New York Times’s international publications and website are popular around the world. The Times also reaches Taiwanese readers through its partnership with the United Daily News. Once a week, a special English language section of the Times is included in the United Daily News. This special insert features international stories, political commentary, and sections relating to arts and culture. With this insert, readers in Taiwan can see what’s hot off the presses from New York City’s premier newspaper.
