There have always been men who’ve taken great care when attending to their grooming and sartorial elegance. From Beau Brummel to Sir Noel Coward, the dandy has a long history. The nineties, however, saw a nearly unprecedented growth of mainstream, heterosexual male vanity. For this new “dandy,” a new term was coined. Ladies and gentlemen welcome … the metrosexual.
By lavishing attention upon himself and actively seeking to be noticed, the metrosexual of today defies traditional expectations of masculinity. Doubts have been cast on the sexual preferences of such men (usually by other men) simply for their style. Metrosexual men embrace mannerisms which in the past only homosexual men practiced. Consider notorious metrosexuals like David Beckham, Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, and Australia’s champion swimmer Ian Thorpe. It’s impossible to be certain, but these heartthrobs seem determinedly straight.
Rushing to usher in this revolution in masculine behavior are the multi-billion-dollar fashion and cosmetic industries that have traditionally targeted women. In the last five years, there has been an explosion in body care products, fashions, and vanity items aimed directly at men. At the same time, magazines like GQ, Esquire, and Men’s Health are working to educate and create manhood’s new paradigm.
Surely Oscar Wilde saw it coming.

G: What’s wrong with soap? Hey, Jerry paints his nails, too, doesn’t he? Is he gay?
M: Not at all. He’s a metrosexual. Jerry just cares about his appearance. And he’s always going on dates with stunning women! You should take a leaf out of his book.

G: Manscaping?! What would my soccer buddies say?

G: All I’m saying is most fashion today is just style before substance.
M: Look, you could develop and accentuate your positive attributes more – that includes your appearance. In today’s increasingly competitive work environment, more men are recognizing that their appearance must work for them.
G: Look, there’s nothing wrong with looking good, but if you catch me shaving my chest, shoot me!
